The Pope Goes to Bethlehem B E T H L E H E M, West Bank, March 22 Near the birthplace of Jesus, Pope John Paul II injected himself into a deep political debate, hailing the Palestinian people, observing their plight as refugees and saying they have a right to a homeland. After touring Bethlehem, where Jesus is said to have been born in a stable and then placed in a manger, the pope began an hourlong tour of nearby Dheishehrefugee camp, where he viewed the cramped living conditions of the 10,000 people there.
